Greenville, Mississippi, Deploys Flock Safety Technology, Including Drone as First Responder

Greenville, Mississippi, marked a significant milestone in public safety Thursday as the city became the first in the state to deploy a complete set of Flock Safety technology, including a drone-based first responder system.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons and Greenville Police Department Chief Marcus Turner, along with other city officials, joined representatives from Flock Safety to preview the new technology. The initiative aims to improve response times and situational awareness during emergencies, officials said.

Chief Turner emphasized that the technology is about more than gadgets. “It’s about getting help where it’s needed faster, giving officers real-time information, and making sure families feel safe in their neighborhoods,” he said. “We built a complete, coordinated public safety strategy by merging law enforcement, community engagement, and innovative technology.”

The drone system allows Greenville officers to have eyes on scenes within seconds of a 911 call, helping to de-escalate situations and protect residents and officers alike. The city’s approach also includes license plate readers, gunshot detection, strict data privacy policies, and technology designed to support, not replace, good policing.

Mayor Simmons noted that Greenville exemplifies how leadership, technological innovation, and community trust can work together to produce tangible results. The city’s efforts have been recognized by The New York Times for demonstrating effective public safety strategies, especially in a smaller community with big ambitions.

Simmons added, “Safe City Greenville shows that innovation, accountability, and constitutional policing can coexist. When they do, communities are safer, officers are better supported, and trust is restored. That’s the future of public safety. Greenville is leading Mississippi—and helping shape that future.”
