The community safe room at Horn Lake Elementary School, located at 6341 Ridgewood, was open during a tornado watch Tuesday afternoon, according to local officials.

The tornado threat has since decreased, and the tornado watch was canceled at 5:24 p.m., prompting the safe rooms to close, authorities said.

Earlier, multiple community safe rooms opened across DeSoto County to provide shelter during the storm threat. The Southaven Community Safe Room at 7312 Highway 51N opened at 3:45 p.m., while Horn Lake Elementary opened at 3:30 p.m. The Lewisburg Elementary Safe Room at 1717 Craft Road opened at 4:15 p.m., and Walls Elementary at 6131 Delta View Road opened at 3:20 p.m. Olive Branch Elementary at 9549 Pigeon Roost also opened earlier in the day.

The safe rooms operated in coordination with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, DeSoto County Government, and the City of Olive Branch.
