Mississippi wildlife agency honors staff for fisheries conservation efforts

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks announced awards for two staff members at its March commission meeting. The department recognized Buford Lessley as the 2025 Fisheries Conservationist of the Year and Jason Thigpen as the 2025 State Lake Conservationist of the Year.

Lessley, a fisheries biologist and project leader in the Central Region since 2022, has made an immediate impact. His work in 2025 included statewide aquatic vegetation control, responding to giant salvinia in the Pearl River watershed, and overseeing projects at Ross Barnett Reservoir. He also launched a largemouth bass movement study, contributed to regional efforts, and mentored new biologists, according to department officials.

Thigpen, who serves as the Central Region State Lakes Supervisor, has more than 20 years of experience. In the past year, he worked to improve safety and accessibility at state lakes, supported staff across regions, and participated in major projects. His responsibilities also included equipment transport, conservation initiatives, and trail enhancements at Calling Panther Lake, officials said.
