Mississippi requests federal disaster declaration after severe winter storms
Mississippi has requested a Major Disaster Declaration from the federal government following severe winter storms that affected the state from January 23 to January 27, 2026, according to Gov. Tate Reeves.
The declaration request includes individual assistance, disaster unemployment benefits, and public assistance to support local governments, including debris removal. Reeves’s office said the state worked closely with FEMA, state agencies, and local officials to assess damage and ensure the need met federal thresholds.
The governor emphasized that the state will continue to utilize all available resources to assist residents and communities affected by the historic winter weather. Reeves also noted that as more damages are identified and verified, the request could be amended to include additional counties for aid.
Reeves said this step is part of ongoing efforts to help Mississippians recover from the storm and assured residents that assistance efforts will continue until recovery is complete.
