Mississippi Delta Hosts Historic MLBC Retreat Opening in Greenville

Greenville, Miss. — The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) kicked off its 2026 retreat Thursday with a welcome breakfast at Harlow’s Casino Resort & Spa. Local officials, including Mayor Errick D. Simmons and Washington County Board of Supervisors President Carl McGee, attended the event.

MLBC Chairman Rep. Kabir Karriem, legislators, mayors, and community leaders joined the gathering in the Mississippi Delta, a region known for its cultural, historical, and civil rights significance. Mayor Simmons described the occasion as a historic moment on historic ground.

“This is more than a gathering—it is a historic moment on historic ground,” Simmons said. “We stand on the shoulders of people who organized, marched, sacrificed, and fought to make democracy real. Now it is our responsibility to turn history into hope, conversation into collaboration, representation into results, and this moment into a movement for a stronger Mississippi.”

Simmons emphasized that elected leaders’ work should lead to tangible progress in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, economic development, and public safety. “We honor those who made history before us by accepting our responsibility to make history today,” he added.

The event marked the beginning of a retreat aimed at fostering dialogue and action among Mississippi’s leaders, highlighting the region’s importance in shaping the state’s future.
