Mississippi black bear population shows signs of recovery

Mississippi’s black bear population has made a significant comeback, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

The department shared a timeline of the black bear population, starting with fewer than 12 bears in 1932. By 1984, estimates increased to about 25 bears. In 2002, the population was estimated to be less than 50. By 2012, numbers surpassed 150, and updated figures are expected to be released soon, the department said.

Since the first population estimates in the early 1900s, Mississippi’s black bears have gone from near extinction to a growing success story, officials noted. The ongoing recovery highlights conservation efforts and the importance of wildlife management in the state.
