Greenville police recover firearm with machine gun conversion device during traffic stop

Greenville police arrested Cedric Curtis Jr. following a traffic stop on Reed Road late Tuesday night. Officers with the department’s Special Operations Division pulled over a Chevrolet Tahoe for an equipment violation around 10:51 p.m., according to a police statement.

During the stop, officers found suspected marijuana, drug paraphernalia, ammunition, and other items in the vehicle. A subsequent search uncovered a concealed firearm in a compartment within the vehicle’s center console, the police report said.

Investigators determined that the firearm had been modified with a device commonly referred to as a “switch,” which can convert a semi-automatic firearm into a machine gun. Curtis was taken into custody and transported to the Greenville Police Department.

Authorities also identified that Curtis has a prior felony conviction. He was cited for several infractions, including improper equipment, expired tags, possession of less than 30 grams of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The firearm investigation remains ongoing, police said.

The Greenville Police Department emphasized its ongoing efforts to remove illegal and modified firearms from the streets through proactive enforcement and saturation patrols. All individuals arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, officials noted.
