Greenville officials urge shelter-in-place order after chemical plant fire
Greenville officials urged residents to shelter in place Wednesday after a fire at Loveland Chemical, formerly Platte Chemical, prompted an order from the Washington County Emergency Operations Center.
The order applies to residents along Highway 82 and VFW Road between Beauchamp Road and Kuehn Road, according to a notice shared by Mayor Errick D. Simmons and the city.
Residents were advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, turn off air-conditioning and ventilation systems that bring in outside air, and avoid the plant and nearby areas. The notice listed eye irritation, coughing, headaches, dizziness, nausea, chest tightness and shortness of breath as possible symptoms of exposure to chemical smoke.
The notice urged anyone experiencing difficulty breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting or seizures to call 911.
