Greenville mayor joins youth discussion on public safety and gun violence
Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons joined young people, law enforcement officers, mentors and community leaders for a discussion on public safety, gun violence and youth empowerment at the Greenville Higher Education Center.
The event, called “Meet the Voices: The Sit Down,” was organized by the B.A.S.S. (Book and Street Smart) Organization. Speakers included Yahya Hersey, Wayne Robert Edwards, known as “Jack Bobo,” John “China Joe” Lofton and Saletheo Perez.
The discussion addressed crime, peer pressure, conflict resolution and positive choices. The city’s post said young people shared their experiences, concerns and ideas.
Simmons said safer communities require listening to and investing in young people, in addition to law enforcement. He also said Greenville has made progress in reducing violent crime but that each young life lost remains a serious concern.
