Greenville Mayor Demands Action After Repeated Optimum Service Outages

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons called for action Monday after a second major Optimum service outage in a week. In a statement, he described the disruptions as unacceptable and emphasized the importance of reliable communications infrastructure.

Simmons noted that internet, telephone, and communication services are now essential for the community. He said residents, businesses, schools, hospitals, and public safety operations rely on these services daily for work, learning, healthcare, and emergency response.

The mayor urged Optimum to implement adequate redundancy, backup systems, and contingency plans to prevent future outages. He expressed concern that repeated failures are disrupting virtually every sector of Greenville’s economy and daily life.

Simmons also pointed out that customers are paying for services they are not receiving. He called for accountability and appropriate relief, such as credits or concessions, for those impacted by the outages.

The mayor demanded that Optimum immediately address the causes of the recurring outages, explain what measures will be taken to prevent future disruptions, and provide relief to affected customers. He said Greenville’s residents and institutions deserve reliable service, and that the ongoing outages cannot become the new normal.
