Authorities Warn of Phone Scams Impersonating Federal Officials

Law enforcement officials are warning the public about ongoing telephone scams involving individuals falsely claiming to represent federal agencies, law enforcement, or investigators. Scammers often threaten arrest, legal action, or the suspension of benefits to pressure victims into providing money.

According to authorities, these scammers typically demand immediate payment through cash apps, gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards. They may also claim that the victim owes money for taxes, warrants, or investigations.

Officials emphasize that federal agencies will not demand immediate payment over the phone or ask for payment via gift cards, Cash App, Zelle, or cryptocurrency. They advise the public not to share personal information, bank details, or Social Security numbers with unknown callers. If someone feels threatened or pressured during a call, authorities recommend hanging up immediately.

Victims or those who suspect they have been targeted should contact local law enforcement and report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission. Authorities also urge community members to share this warning, especially with seniors who are often targeted by scammers.
