Thermal drones enhance deer population surveys, study finds

Thermal drones are transforming how wildlife officials survey deer populations. Equipped with thermal cameras, these drones can fly over properties at night and detect heat signatures of deer below, reducing the need for thousands of photographs.

However, accurately estimating deer numbers from thermal drone data involves more than just detection. Factors like flight paths, transect spacing, and survey design influence results, according to recent research from Auburn University’s Deer Lab.

The study aims to improve the reliability of population estimates derived from thermal drone surveys. Researchers are working to understand how to better implement these tools for wildlife management and conservation efforts.
