Spring brings young wildlife activity to Mississippi

Spring is in full swing in Mississippi, and it is a busy time for young animals on the move, wildlife officials say. Many people are seeing young birds on the ground outside their nests.

Most fledglings leave the nest before they can fly and spend days or weeks hopping on the ground. During this period, they learn to forage while their adult feathers grow in. Adult birds typically stay nearby, continuing to feed and guide their young.

Wildlife officials warn that this is a vulnerable time for fledglings and their parents, especially with free-roaming pets and other wildlife nearby. Experts advise against collecting or caring for birds without proper authorization.
