Shooting in Sardis leaves one dead, one injured, police say

Panola County deputies responded to a reported shooting on Highway 51 near Dewberry Street in Sardis shortly after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office. The Sardis Police Department requested assistance at the scene.

Authorities said two individuals were injured in the incident. One victim, identified as Gary Walls Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a gunshot wound. The second victim, Janiya Fonville, sustained injuries and was transported to Panola Medical Center. She is listed in stable condition, officials said.

The Sardis Police Department is leading the investigation. The case remains active and no additional details are available at this time. Police urged anyone with information to contact the department.
