Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued for Parts of Mississippi
The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of northwestern Mississippi. The warning covers northeastern Sunflower County, southwestern Grenada County, northern Leflore County, and Bolivar County, and is in effect until 9:30 p.m. CDT, according to a recent alert.
The warning was issued after radar indicated a severe thunderstorm over Gunnison, about 8 miles west of Shelby. The storm is moving east at 45 mph and is producing wind gusts of up to 60 mph and hail the size of quarters, the agency said.
Hail damage to vehicles is expected, along with potential wind damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The storm is expected to pass near Shelby, Mound Bayou, Duncan, Winstonville, and Deeson around 8:35 p.m. CDT. It will move through Parchman and Rome around 8:50 p.m. CDT.
The National Weather Service recommends moving indoors to an interior room on the lowest floor for safety. A tornado watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT for north central and northwestern Mississippi, the agency added.
This alert was sent via the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency’s Regroup Mass Notification Network. Officials advise residents to stay alert for further updates.
