Severe Storm Threatens Mississippi with Tornadoes, Hail and Heavy Rain

Severe storms are forecast to impact parts of Mississippi from this afternoon through early Thursday, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.

The main hazards include tornadoes, some possibly strong, damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, and hail the size of quarters to golf balls. Heavy rainfall is also expected, potentially leading to flash flooding.

Rainfall totals of 3 to 5 inches are possible along and southeast of the Natchez Trace and mainly north of the Highway 84 corridor. Locally higher amounts may occur, increasing the risk of flooded roads and minor river flooding.

The weather service advises motorists to avoid flooded roads and to ‘turn around, don’t drown.’ Emergency officials urge residents to stay alert and prepared as conditions develop.
