Panola County to Commemorate Deputy Joe Cosby with Memorial Mile Walk

Panola County law enforcement officials will hold a memorial event Wednesday to honor Deputy Joe Cosby, who was killed in the line of duty in 1988. The event, called the Joe Cosby Memorial Mile Walk, will involve deputies from the Panola County Sheriff’s Office, Batesville Police Department, and other agencies.

The procession will begin at the gravesite in Magnolia Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., where the flag will be lowered to half-staff. Participants will then walk down Eureka Street to the Batesville Courthouse, also with the flag lowered to half-staff. Traffic at the intersections of Perkins Lane and Eureka Street and Mississippi Highway 6 and Eureka Street will be briefly paused for the procession, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Cosby was killed on September 30, 1988, while transporting a prisoner to court. His death sent shockwaves through Panola County and beyond. The sheriff’s office said Cosby will be remembered and honored during the event.

The sheriff’s office added that a more detailed post about the memorial will be shared Wednesday. The event is part of ongoing efforts to commemorate Cosby’s service and sacrifice.
