Panola County Honors Deputy Joe Cosby on His Memorial Day
Panola County is observing Deputy Joe Cosby Day to honor the fallen law enforcement officer, who died in the line of duty 35 years ago. The county remembers Deputy Cosby’s service and sacrifice on the anniversary of his death.
On Sept. 30, 1988, Deputy Cosby, then 48, was scheduled to pick up a convicted felon from Tunica County Jail for a court appearance in Panola County. According to authorities, he was shot and fatally wounded during the transfer near Highway 51 in North Batesville.
Sources say the prisoner, who was later sentenced to life in prison, overpowered Deputy Cosby using a makeshift shank fashioned from a toothbrush. The inmate then seized Deputy Cosby’s gun, leading to a struggle that resulted in Cosby’s death. Law enforcement responded quickly and apprehended the suspect near the water treatment plant on Old Panola Road.
Friends and colleagues remember Deputy Cosby for his infectious laugh and positive outlook. His daughter, Pennie Cosby Branch, said her father’s laugh was a way to identify his presence, adding that he always saw the good in people. Cosby’s badge number, P-5, was retired and will never be used again by the Panola County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputy Cosby’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. The sheriff’s office and community continue to honor his memory and sacrifice, emphasizing that his heroism will never be forgotten.
