No hazards detected in air monitoring after Greenville plant fire

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality detected no hazards during air monitoring after a chemical plant fire in Greenville, Washington County Emergency Management said Thursday.

Monitoring continued after the fire, which occurred Wednesday. Emergency management said glyphosate was not involved.

Black smoke may continue coming from the site for several days, officials said. Residents were advised to avoid the area and limit exposure to smoke.

People exposed to the fire or smoke should watch for symptoms that may be delayed, including coughing or difficulty breathing, chest tightness, eye irritation, headaches and nausea. Those experiencing symptoms should seek medical guidance. Officials said to call 911 for severe breathing problems or other life-threatening symptoms.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons said the city would continue coordinating with emergency management officials and sharing verified updates.
