National Police Week honors officers’ service and sacrifice

National Police Week, observed annually in May, honors law enforcement officers who serve and protect communities across the United States. The observance includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15 and a week of events recognizing officers who have died in the line of duty, as well as those currently serving.

Established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week is both a solemn remembrance and a celebration of officers’ dedication and bravery. It highlights the commitment, sacrifice, and family sacrifices behind every badge, according to organizers.

This year, the Town of Tunica will host a memorial program on Wednesday, May 13, at 11:30 a.m. at the amphitheater in the downtown park. The event aims to honor officers’ service and remember those who have fallen in the line of duty.

While the week is a time of reflection, it also underscores the importance of community support for law enforcement officers nationwide, officials said.
