Mississippi Wildlife Agency Warns Youth Hunters to Prioritize Safety

Mississippi’s youth turkey season opens tomorrow, prompting the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) to remind hunters to prioritize safety while sharing their knowledge with young hunters.

The agency emphasizes the importance of demonstrating safe hunting habits, especially to youth learning the sport. MDWFP recommends following the acronym SAFETY to promote safe practices: Set out with working equipment and gear; Always keep the safety on until ready to shoot; Fire only when certain of the target and beyond; Enter a hunter education class before hunting; Tell someone your plans; and Youth should observe safe habits.

MDWFP encourages families and friends to take hunter education classes together, adding that a safe hunt is more important than a successful one. The program aims to foster responsible hunting and ensure safety for all participants, especially young hunters.
