Mississippi wildlife agency has tracked black bears for over 20 years

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) has been monitoring black bears for more than 20 years. The agency emphasizes the importance of reproductive data in understanding population trends over time.

MDWFP gathers this data primarily through den checks. During these checks, a GPS-collared sow is sedated in her den. Researchers then briefly measure and weigh her cubs and assess their health.

As data accumulates, it allows scientists to trace each bear’s lineage over multiple generations. For example, a south delta bear named F920 was first collared in 2005 after migrating from Louisiana. Her lineage can now be traced through five generations, and several bears in her family tree are still being tracked today, according to MDWFP.

This long-term research highlights how decades of dedicated effort can produce critical data for black bear conservation efforts.
