Mississippi Velvet Deer Season Set for September 2026

Mississippi’s Velvet Season for deer archery hunting will take place from September 11 to 13, 2026, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP). The season allows hunters to harvest one legal buck in velvet, which counts toward their annual antlered deer limit.

A Velvet Season Permit is required to hunt during these dates. Residents can purchase a permit for $10, while non-residents’ permits are included in the $100 deer permit. Permits are available at locations where hunting or fishing licenses are sold.

Hunting is limited to private lands and opted-in public lands. No Wildlife Management Areas or open public lands that follow statewide regulations will participate in this year’s Velvet Season, MDWFP said. Hunters should check specific land regulations before planning their hunt.

Additional rules include reporting harvests by 10 p.m. on the day of harvest via the MDWFP HuntFish app or web portal. All harvested bucks must be submitted for chronic wasting disease sampling at designated drop-off sites or participating taxidermists within five days of harvest, the agency added.
