Mississippi kicks off youth turkey season with JAKES Day at Leaf River WMA

Last Saturday, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks launched the 2026 youth turkey season with a JAKES Day at Leaf River Wildlife Management Area in South Mississippi.

In partnership with the National Wild Turkey Federation, MDWFP hosted over 100 children under age 15 for a day of outdoor activities and turkey hunting education. Participants experienced turkey call demonstrations led by professionals and learned gun safety from conservation officers.

Many kids took home prizes, including guns, kayaks, and turkey gear. The event was supported by local sponsors and community partners, according to MDWFP.

The agency expressed gratitude to those who helped organize the event and wished good luck to all JAKES participants this spring.
