Mississippi Frog Season Opens with Nighttime Hunting Tradition

During warm spring and summer nights, the calls of bullfrogs echo across ditches, swamps, rice fields, and ponds in Mississippi, according to wildlife officials. The tradition of catching frogs during hot summer evenings has been part of Southern culture for many years.

While some hunters find success during daylight, most prefer to hunt at night using spotlights. Techniques include using a long crappie fishing pole with a small treble hook and jib or a gig. Others opt for stealth, sneaking up to grab frogs by hand.
