Mississippi Fishery Staff Conduct Electrofishing to Monitor Fish Populations

Over the past week, staff from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks have been conducting electrofishing, a method also known as fish shocking. This technique temporarily stuns fish, allowing biologists to safely and efficiently gather data on species, population size, and health.

According to MDWFP, electrofishing helps assess the status of fish populations and supports conservation efforts. In some cases, select fish may also assist hatchery spawning efforts to stock and enhance public waters throughout Mississippi.

The department emphasizes that electrofishing is a safe and effective tool for managing fish populations and ensuring healthy aquatic ecosystems across the state.
