Hurricane Isaias Brings Strong Winds, Heavy Rain to Mississippi
Strong wind gusts are expected to pose a growing threat across parts of Mississippi as Hurricane Isaias moves inland this evening and heads northward into Alabama overnight, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi.
Gusts exceeding 50 mph could occur beginning during the overnight hours and continue into early Saturday across much of east and northeast Mississippi. Elsewhere, gusts in the 40-50 mph range are possible, which could lead to scattered downed trees and power lines, resulting in some power outages.
Locally heavy rainfall is possible in east and northeast Mississippi, with a threat of flooding in these areas. However, some areas farther south and west may see little to no rain, especially along and west of the Mississippi River. The system’s rainfall is expected to move out of the region, and winds should diminish by Saturday evening.
Residents are advised to prepare for strong wind gusts tonight through Saturday, and to stay updated on weather conditions as the system progresses.
