Historic Cleveland Post Office Becomes Police Department

The building that now houses the Cleveland Police Department once served as the U.S. Post Office in Cleveland, Mississippi, until the 1980s, according to city officials.

Built in 1934, the structure is one of 32 buildings in Mississippi funded by the Public Works Administration during the Great Depression. It was the first federal building in Bolivar County and became a community hub for decades.

Residents used the post office to send and receive mail and to connect with neighbors. The building was designated a Mississippi Landmark on September 20, 1988.

Officials noted a fun fact: the Cleveland police building is a twin to the former post office in Exeter, New Hampshire, built around 1933.
