Hinds County Sheriff’s Office Honors Civil Rights Advocate Hezekiah Watkins

Hezekiah Watkins was honored Monday during the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office Quarterly Awards Ceremony for his lifelong dedication to civil rights and human dignity. Watkins, who was just 13 when he was arrested and sent to Parchman Prison for participating in the Freedom Rides, has become a prominent figure in Mississippi’s civil rights history, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The release states that Watkins’ experience of being arrested for simply being present during the Freedom Rides inspired a commitment to justice. Over the years, he has organized marches, educated others, and stood against hatred and violence. His efforts have made him one of Mississippi’s most influential living witnesses to the Civil Rights Movement.

During the ceremony, the sheriff’s office awarded Watkins the Sheriff’s Award for his contributions to civil rights and service to humanity. Additionally, he was sworn in as an Honorary Hinds County Sheriff’s Deputy, the release said. The sheriff’s office praised Watkins for exemplifying courage and inspiring future generations.
