Herbicide-resistant weeds pose growing challenge to land managers

Repeated use of the same herbicide can create resistant weeds in as little as three to five years, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. This resistance presents a growing challenge for wildlife managers, hunters, and landowners who maintain food plots.

Resistant weeds survive chemical treatments that would typically control them. This leads to decreased crop performance, reduced forage availability, and increased time spent managing plots, the department said.

However, officials noted that effective strategies can help regain control. These include rotating herbicide modes of action, using cover crops, and improving application timing. With smart planning and consistent monitoring, land managers can maintain productive, wildlife-friendly habitats, the department added.
