Greenville marks Native American Day at Winterville Mounds

Mayor Errick D. Simmons joined tribal representatives, educators, students and community members Friday at historic Winterville Mounds in Greenville to mark Native American Day and recognize Indigenous history and culture.

The city said the site served as a Native American ceremonial and gathering center from about A.D. 1000 to 1450. Cherokee and Choctaw guests attended the event, according to a post by the city of Greenville.

“America’s story did not begin 250 years ago,” Simmons said in a statement, referring to the country’s upcoming 250th anniversary. He said Indigenous history reaches back thousands of years and called for preserving its lessons and sharing them with future generations.

The city thanked the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the Greenville Garden Club, educators, students and community partners for supporting preservation and education efforts at the site.
