Greenville man charged with firearm possession after fleeing police

Greenville police arrested a man Tuesday after he fled from officers during a traffic stop and discarded a firearm. Officers were patrolling near the intersection of St. Charles and Ireys Streets in response to narcotics complaints when they noticed a black Nissan Altima without a visible tag stopped in the middle of Ireys Street.

Police activated their lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle began moving forward as officers approached. The passenger door then opened, and the suspect fled on foot. Officers pursued and apprehended the 21-year-old suspect, identified as Lajayvion Moy of Greenville.

During the chase, officers observed Moy toss a firearm underneath a residence. He was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and gang activity. Moy is currently awaiting his initial appearance at the Washington County Regional Correctional Facility.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty, police said.
