Greenville hosts community event to raise awareness about colorectal cancer

The City of Greenville hosted a community event today to promote awareness of colorectal cancer. The event included an interactive tour of a life-sized inflatable colon and discussions with healthcare professionals, according to city officials.

Colorectal cancer remains one of the most preventable yet deadly cancers, with early screening crucial for saving lives, the city said. The event aimed to educate residents on the importance of routine screenings, symptoms, and recent advancements in prevention and treatment.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons emphasized the city’s commitment to public health. “Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related deaths,” he said. “Through education, awareness, and early detection, we can save lives.”

The mayor encouraged residents to take advantage of screening options and speak with healthcare providers. Remelda Lewis, mayor’s health council coordinator, was recognized for organizing the event, which officials hope will motivate more community members to prioritize their health.
