Greenville FoodCorps Members Participate in School Garden Training

GREENVILLE, Miss. — FoodCorps members from Greenville participated in a statewide training session at Stern and Weddington Elementary Schools, part of an effort to promote nutrition education and healthy living, according to city officials.

During the event, FoodCorps members, including Lieshia Coleman, Sam Scott, and Daijah Tyson, worked together to prepare and establish raised garden beds. Students will soon plant fall crops, providing hands-on learning opportunities about food, nutrition, and agriculture, officials said.

FoodCorps Mississippi Manager Kristy Graham emphasized the importance of the program, stating that it aims to give children the chance to experience the benefits of nourishing food and develop lifelong healthy habits. The organization focuses on building school gardens and creating educational experiences that connect students to food and their communities.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that these gardens serve as classrooms where children can learn, grow healthy habits, and foster community strength. He thanked FoodCorps Mississippi, the organization’s staff, and the educators and students involved for their commitment to student success and community health.

Greenville’s efforts aim to cultivate healthier children, stronger families, and a brighter future through gardening and nutrition education, officials said. The city continues to prioritize initiatives that support health and education for its youth.
