Deputies rescue child from burning house in Edwards

Hinds County deputies responded to a house fire late Tuesday night in Edwards, Mississippi, after reports that six children were trapped inside the residence. The fire was reported around 10 p.m. on the 200 block of Utica Street.

When deputies arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Neighbors already attempting to rescue the children successfully pulled out five of them, ages 13, 9, 3, 2, and 2, according to the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were told that a four-year-old boy remained inside. They searched the exterior of the home and found the child unconscious in a bedroom through a window. A deputy used an object to move debris and reached inside to retrieve the child, who was not breathing at the time.

CPR was administered immediately. The child regained breathing but remained unconscious. He was transported by ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he is listed in very critical condition, officials said.

The sheriff’s office asked the community to keep the child in their prayers as medical staff continue treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with the Mississippi Department of Child Protection Services involved. Authorities have not yet determined the origin or manner of the fire, and interviews are ongoing.

The sheriff’s office praised the neighbors and deputies for their courageous efforts that saved multiple lives during the incident.
