Cold temperatures and wind chills threaten parts of Mississippi
Temperatures are dropping below freezing across parts of Mississippi, with many areas expected to reach the teens by sunrise Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.
Gusty winds tonight into Saturday will produce wind chills in the single digits and possibly below zero in some spots, the agency said. Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing during the day Saturday.
Officials warn that frostbite can occur quickly and hypothermia is likely with prolonged exposure. The cold weather could also cause damage to exposed pipes and lead to water main breaks.
Power outages are continuing in some areas, which could worsen the cold conditions. Wind-driven ice and weakened trees increase the risk of additional power outages, officials said.
Residents are advised to take precautions to stay warm and protect pipes, and to be prepared for possible outages as the cold snap persists.
