Arctic Cold Continues in Mississippi With Dangerous Wind Chills and Storm Damage
Arctic air is sweeping into Mississippi, bringing dangerously cold temperatures that are expected to persist through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson.
Gusty winds are intensifying the cold, with wind chills likely to dip below 5 degrees Fahrenheit tonight. Subzero wind chills are also possible, officials said.
While temperatures will remain cold into Sunday, lighter winds are expected to reduce wind chill concerns. However, temperatures could drop as low as 10 to 15 degrees, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, the weather service warned.
The ongoing cold snap could cause additional problems, including damage to exposed pipes, water main breaks, and continued power outages. Snow and ice cover in the northwest Delta are creating slick roads and challenging travel conditions.
Authorities cautioned that strong winds could damage weakened or damaged trees and may hinder power restoration efforts. Residents are advised to prepare for extended cold weather and have a plan in place in case of power outages.
