Winter Storm Watch issued for parts of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana
A winter storm watch has been issued for portions of southeast Arkansas, northeast Louisiana, and multiple regions in Mississippi, including central and northern areas. The National Weather Service warns of heavy mixed precipitation, mainly ice and sleet, beginning Friday afternoon and lasting through Sunday afternoon.
The storm is expected to cause slick and hazardous roads, especially on bridges and overpasses. Authorities warn of potential power outages lasting more than a day and extensive tree damage due to ice accumulation. Travel could become impossible in affected areas, prompting officials to advise caution and preparation.
The onset of sleet and freezing rain is expected to spread from northwest to southeast Friday afternoon into early Saturday. The wintry mix could persist into Sunday, with dangerously cold temperatures also forecast for Friday night into early next week. The weather service recommends monitoring updates and delaying travel whenever possible.
Travelers are advised to carry winter storm kits, including tire chains, booster cables, flashlights, shovels, blankets, and extra clothing. It is also recommended to take water, a first aid kit, and other survival essentials in case of being stranded. Residents in the affected areas include counties in Mississippi such as Madison, Warren, Hinds, and Lowndes; parts of Arkansas like Ashley and Chicot; and Louisiana’s Morehouse and West Carroll parishes.
