Winter storm brings ice, snow, and dangerous cold to Mississippi region

A winter storm is expected to impact parts of Mississippi starting Friday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. The storm is forecast to produce rain, freezing rain, and sleet, prompting ice storm warnings for northwest portions of the area.

The agency said additional warnings are likely as the storm develops over the weekend. Impacts could include hazardous travel conditions, downed trees, and widespread power outages. Power outages in northwest areas could last for several days, officials warned.

Temperatures are expected to drop sharply during and after the storm. Much of the northwestern half of the region could see lows in the single digits over the weekend into early next week. High temperatures during the coldest period are expected to remain at or below freezing in much of the area.

Officials cautioned that frostbite and hypothermia are risks with prolonged exposure to the extreme cold. Damage to pipes and water main breaks are also possible. Areas with significant ice accumulation could face the coldest temperatures and prolonged outages, making the cold especially dangerous. Residents are advised to prepare to stay warm in case of power loss.
