Officials urge caution as roads remain hazardous amid winter conditions

Emergency officials are warning residents about hazardous travel conditions due to ongoing winter weather. I-55 is nearly impassable in spots from the county line to the county line, according to local authorities.

Highways 6, 51, and 35 have black ice in some areas and are rough over hard-packed ice, officials said. Secondary roads have not thawed much and remain treacherous.

Officials advise residents to drive slowly and exercise extreme caution if they must travel. They are working with the Mississippi Department of Transportation and Panola County Emergency Operations to clear roadways.

Deputies are also working with inmate work crews to remove blockages and debris from the roads, authorities said. Residents are urged to stay home if possible to avoid dangerous conditions.
