New Exhibit Highlights History of Black Main Street in Washington County

The Washington County Economic Alliance announced the opening of a new exhibit on Historic Nelson Street titled “The Delta’s Black Main Street.” The exhibit features a bronze statue of a young African American reading about rural Black populations.

The display highlights the origins of enslaved Africans in the Delta and their transformation into the region’s enduring rural Black community, according to organizers. Visitors are encouraged to explore the history that shaped the local culture and economy.

The exhibit is located in Greenville, Mississippi, and is part of ongoing efforts to celebrate and preserve the region’s rich African American heritage. Local organizations including the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Mississippi Business Journal, and the Delta Regional Authority support the initiative.
