Mississippi wildlife officials highlight how to distinguish male turkeys

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks released tips for identifying male wild turkeys, focusing on differences between adults and juveniles. The agency emphasized three key features: beard length, spurs, and tail fan.

According to officials, adult male turkeys, or gobblers, typically have longer, more pronounced beards and sharper, longer spurs. Their tail feathers form a smooth, even fan. Juvenile males, known as jakes, have shorter beards, smaller spurs, and an uneven tail fan with longer feathers in the center.

Body size also helps distinguish between the two. Toms are generally larger and more robust than jakes. Experts advise hunters and bird enthusiasts to pay close attention to these features for confident identification in the field.
