Mississippi wildlife officials conduct annual bear den checks

Mississippi wildlife officials are conducting their annual black bear den checks as part of ongoing research efforts. The checks focus on collared female bears, known as sows, to monitor reproduction and gather genetic data.

Since female bears typically give birth in late January and early February, the checks are usually carried out in early March. Over the past few weeks, staff from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks have located multiple bears in their winter dens.

During the inspections, technicians sedated the sows to take measurements and genetic samples from the cubs. Afterward, the cubs were returned to their dens, and the bears were awakened. The department reports that this year’s den checks are nearing completion.

Officials also announced upcoming events, including MDWFP’s 2026 Bear Week, scheduled for April 26 to May 2. They encourage the public to follow their channels for updates and activities celebrating Mississippi’s black bears.
