Mississippi Wildlife Department Launches Largemouth Bass Tagging Study at Ross Barnett Reservoir

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks staff have initiated a largemouth bass tagging study at Ross Barnett Reservoir. The project involves fitting bass over 19 inches with orange T-bar tags to track their survival, growth, and movement after tournaments.

Biologists record length, weight, and tag data when fish are released. They rely on anglers to report recaptures, which helps build a better understanding of how these fish use the reservoir over time. More than 200 bass have been tagged so far, including several trophy-sized fish.

Anglers are encouraged to assist with the research by reporting any tagged bass caught outside of tournament events. They should text the tag number, capture location, a clear photo of the tag, and whether the fish was released or harvested to (601) 691-4874. If the fish is released, anglers are asked to leave the tag in place, as the study is ongoing.

According to MDWFP, the tags have no monetary or prize value and serve solely to contribute to scientific research.
