Mississippi turkey hunters play key role in conservation efforts

Mississippi turkey hunters play a vital role in conserving the state’s wild turkey population, wildlife officials say. Their participation includes funding habitat work and research, as well as collaborating with agency biologists on private land management.

Hunter-funded programs support conservation efforts through the purchase of the Mississippi Wild Turkey Stamp, hunting licenses, and federal excise taxes collected via the Pittman-Robertson Act. These funds are reinvested into habitat improvements, research, and long-term turkey management across the state.

Hunters also assist with population management by reporting harvests through Game Check, practicing responsible harvesting, and participating in the Spring Gobbler Hunting Survey, according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks.

In addition, hunters contribute to habitat stewardship by conducting prescribed burns, managing timber for wildlife, and establishing food plots. Their efforts ensure that wild turkeys remain a thriving part of Mississippi’s outdoor heritage, officials said.
