Mississippi Fishery Officials Work to Remove Invasive Plants at Lake Tangipahoa

Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP) fisheries staff have been working at Percy Quin State Park’s Lake Tangipahoa to remove invasive aquatic plants, including water hyacinth and Cuban bulrush, following recent flooding.

The invasive species spread rapidly, crowding out native plants and restricting public access. Controlling these plants is vital to maintaining the health of the lake and ensuring boating and fishing opportunities for visitors, officials said.

The public is also urged to help prevent the spread of invasive species. MDWFP recommends practicing the Clean, Drain, Dry method—cleaning boats and gear, draining all water, and drying equipment before visiting another waterbody. Officials emphasized that this is one of the most effective ways to protect Mississippi’s waterways from invasive species.
