Mississippi civil rights leader John Perkins dies at 89
Mayor Errick D. Simmons expressed condolences Monday following the death of John Perkins, a respected civil rights leader in Mississippi. Perkins, known to many as “Daddy,” died at home on March 13, 2026, surrounded by family.
Perkins was widely recognized as a voice for justice, reconciliation, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He received 19 honorary doctorate degrees and was celebrated for his contributions to social justice and community healing.
He was married to Vera Mae Perkins for 74 years, and they had eight children. His family described him as a man of courage, humility, faith, and love, who dedicated his life to God, people, and reconciliation efforts.
In a statement, Simmons asked the community to keep the Perkins family in their prayers as they mourn and honor his legacy. Perkins’ daughter, V. Elizabeth Perkins, expressed gratitude for his life and pledged to carry his legacy forward.
