Mississippi braces for worsening winter conditions as freezing rain persists
Freezing rain remains a concern across parts of north central and northern Mississippi, according to the latest forecast updates. Reports indicate ice accumulation near Starkville, with the freezing line shifting closer to Columbus.
Power outages are increasing as icy conditions affect the region. Meanwhile, areas to the south and west are experiencing a lull in precipitation. However, officials expect a new wave of wintry weather to arrive after sunset, bringing additional precipitation to the area.
In areas where temperatures remain below freezing, roads that are currently slushy and somewhat drivable are expected to become more icy and dangerous. Temperatures are dropping rapidly in the northwest, with readings in the teens in Bolivar County and Greenville down to 20 degrees.
Officials urge residents to report local precipitation types and amounts, as these reports help track the storm’s progression and impact. Travelers and residents are advised to exercise caution as icy conditions are forecast to worsen overnight.
