Horn Lake Elementary safe room opens at 5:30 p.m. amid severe weather threat
The safe room at Horn Lake Elementary School, located at 6341 Ridgewood, will open at 5:30 p.m. today amid a forecasted threat of severe weather, according to officials.
DeSoto County authorities announced that community safe rooms will open across the county this afternoon. These facilities are available to anyone who prefers sheltering in a safe location before a storm, rather than at their home. Officials emphasized that the safe rooms are not intended for residents to drive to once a tornado warning is issued.
Other safe rooms opening today include Hernando Elementary at 455 Riley Street, Hernando; Hope Sullivan Elementary at 7985 Southaven Circle West, Southaven; Lewisburg Elementary at 1717 Craft Road, Olive Branch; Walls Elementary at 6131 Delta View Road, Walls; and Olive Branch Elementary at 9549 Pigeon Roost, Olive Branch.
Additionally, the Southaven Community Safe Room at 7312 Highway 51 North will open at the issuance of a tornado watch. Local government agencies, including the cities of Olive Branch, Hernando, Horn Lake, and Southaven, as well as the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office and DeSoto County government, are coordinating the efforts.
Officials urged residents to stay informed and use these safe rooms if they feel more comfortable sheltering before severe weather strikes.
