Greenwood prepares for winter weather with shelters and safety measures

The City of Greenwood and Leflore County held a special meeting with Emergency Management Director Fred Randle to discuss safety measures ahead of an incoming winter storm, according to local officials.

The National Weather Service has issued alerts for Greenwood and surrounding areas, citing the potential for freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Officials emphasized efforts to keep residents safe and provide access to warm shelter during the storm.

Warming stations will operate from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. at the Senior Citizens Building, 507 Howard Street, for men, and at Old Fire Station No. 3, 106 E. Claiborne Avenue, for women.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Greenwood Police Department and Leflore County Sheriff’s Department, will increase patrols throughout the weekend. Officials also noted that icy road conditions could delay emergency response times.

Transportation assistance will be available for healthcare workers needing rides to or from hospitals and clinics. The departments urged healthcare workers to contact the appropriate agency for help.

Public Works crews will monitor roads and bridges within the city, applying salt and clearing roads as needed. Leflore County’s Road and Bridge Department will conduct similar road assessments across the county.

Residents are encouraged to report weather-related damage to Fred Randle, who will relay information to the state. Contact numbers for local agencies and utilities are provided for assistance and updates.

Officials advise residents to stay informed through the City of Greenwood’s official channels as the weather situation unfolds.
